Several of our Engineering team members attended the 2024 ANS Annual Conference in Las Vegas, NV, on June 16-19. Director of Systems Engineering Dr. Ethan Bates and Senior Engineer Matt Waples presented their respective papers during the "ARPA-E ONWARDS and CURIE Project Updates: II" session on Tuesday, June 18. Ethan presented his paper entitled "Reference Shale Host Rock Properties and Chemistries for Deep Borehole Disposal Performance Modeling", and Matt presented his paper entitled "Economic Model Development for Deep Borehole Repositories".

The ANS conference is one of the largest gatherings of nuclear professionals in the country where the brightest minds engage – and inspire – leaders from across the nuclear science and technology landscape.

Deep Isolation’s Head of Engineering, Jesse Sloane, presented Deep Isolation and UPWARDS project (Universal Performance Criteria and Canister for Advanced Reactor Waste Form Acceptance in Borehole and Mined Repositories Considering Design Safety) work developing waste acceptance criteria for the Universal Canister System (UCS). The IAEA conference is intended to provide a forum for the exchange of information on national spent nuclear fuel management strategies. The development of the UCS and its waste acceptance criteria could play a crucial role in the deployment of advanced reactor technology across the global.

COO Rod Baltzer was invited as a speaker to the Annual RadWaste Summit on June 3-5 in Louisville, KY.

Rod participated in a panel discussion alongside NAC International, Orano, and Dominion Engineering, on the topic "Beyond Disposal: Commercial Achievements and Innovations in Spent Fuel Management". Managing spent nuclear fuel is a critical aspect of nuclear energy production, requiring innovative solutions to ensure safety, security, and environmental protection. This session delved into the latest commercial achievements and cutting-edge innovations in spent fuel management, addressing the challenges and opportunities in this vital area.

The RadWaste Summit is a renowned forum to discuss challenges and solutions to the management and disposition of radioactive waste. This forum is also a powerful relationship-building opportunity to reach some of the most influential government officials and organizations.

COO Rod Baltzer spoke on a panel discussing nuclear waste issues at the Energy Communities Alliance’s third New Nuclear Forum, the only meeting bringing together DOE, federal, state, local and tribal governments and policymakers with developers, utilities, regulators, industry, and academia to identify opportunities, challenges and to build the partnerships necessary to support new nuclear development.

Elizabeth Muller and Jesse Sloane participated in panel sessions at the NEI Used Fuel Conference.NEI’s Used Fuel Management Conference provides attendees the opportunity to remain at the forefront of an industry sector that has built an impressive track record of success. The May 7-9 event in Orlando delved into the industry’s strategic vision for used fuel, the latest technology advances in used fuel management, regulatory efficiency improvements, decommissioning and related topics.

The EarthX annual E-Capital Summit, part of the EarthX week, was an invitation-only conference that has convened, inspired, and catalyzed action from thousands of investment firms, early to late-stage innovators, established global companies, industry thought leaders, national policymakers, incubators & accelerators, and researchers that have had substantial, positive impacts on investments, businesses, people, and our planet. EarthX is an international nonprofit environmental organization dedicated to educating and inspiring people and organizations to take action towards a more sustainable future worldwide.

In March, Jesse Sloane, Deep Isolation’s Head of Engineering, shared Deep Isolation’s latest technical advances in deep borehole disposal of nuclear waste with the Philadelphia and Bucks County Chapters of the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers (PSPE). The PSPE is a statewide organization, part of the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE), dedicated to maintaining the professional integrity of the engineering profession. PSPE and NSPE provide resources for licensed engineers, while promoting engineering education and professional development.

Join nearly 3,000 attendees from more than 30 countries to discuss and share ideas on many crosscutting topics including: robotic handling, remote systems, new technologies, radioactive and hazardous waste characterization, treatment storage, packaging, transportation, and disposal, engineering design and construction, environmental laboratories, decontamination, decommissioning, and environmental remediation – as well as emerging topics such as small modular reactors, clean energy, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM).
