2024 ANS Annual Conference

Several of our Engineering team members attended the 2024 ANS Annual Conference in Las Vegas, NV, on June 16-19. Director of Systems Engineering Dr. Ethan Bates and Senior Engineer Matt Waples presented their respective papers during the "ARPA-E ONWARDS and CURIE Project Updates: II" session on Tuesday, June 18. Ethan presented his paper entitled "Reference Shale Host Rock Properties and Chemistries for Deep Borehole Disposal Performance Modeling", and Matt presented his paper entitled "Economic Model Development for Deep Borehole Repositories".

The ANS conference is one of the largest gatherings of nuclear professionals in the country where the brightest minds engage – and inspire – leaders from across the nuclear science and technology landscape.

International Conference on the Management of Spent Fuel from Nuclear Power Reactors: Meeting the Moment

Deep Isolation’s Head of Engineering, Jesse Sloane, presented Deep Isolation and UPWARDS project (Universal Performance Criteria and Canister for Advanced Reactor Waste Form Acceptance in Borehole and Mined Repositories Considering Design Safety) work developing waste acceptance criteria for the Universal Canister System (UCS). The IAEA conference is intended to provide a forum for the exchange of information on national spent nuclear fuel management strategies. The development of the UCS and its waste acceptance criteria could play a crucial role in the deployment of advanced reactor technology across the global.

COO Rod Baltzer was invited as a speaker to the Annual RadWaste Summit on June 3-5 in Louisville, KY.

Rod participated in a panel discussion alongside NAC International, Orano, and Dominion Engineering, on the topic "Beyond Disposal: Commercial Achievements and Innovations in Spent Fuel Management". Managing spent nuclear fuel is a critical aspect of nuclear energy production, requiring innovative solutions to ensure safety, security, and environmental protection. This session delved into the latest commercial achievements and cutting-edge innovations in spent fuel management, addressing the challenges and opportunities in this vital area.

The RadWaste Summit is a renowned forum to discuss challenges and solutions to the management and disposition of radioactive waste. This forum is also a powerful relationship-building opportunity to reach some of the most influential government officials and organizations.
