Highly radioactive waste should not only be disposed of and safeguarded as a public health and safety matter but it also needs to be secure from those who seek to divert the material for nefarious purposes. Currently, the industry consensus is that deep geologic disposal is the best method for both safeguarding and nonproliferation purposes. Deep Isolation is a deep geologic disposal system that disposes of nuclear waste at depths of more than 1,000 meters, which, in most cases, is many hundreds of meters deeper than the industry standard for nuclear waste disposal. This method provides a proliferation-resistant and tamper-resistant disposal option both in the U.S. and internationally.
